What is the Thunderbolts About

Published on Sep 30, 2022 by Amaya Jalal

Salutations! Today, I’m here to discuss an upcoming movie announced by Marvel at Comic-Con. The release date is set to be July 26, 2024. Little is known about this film, so I’m here to clear things up.

First off, to any DC fans out there, I have something that may help you understand. If you are a DC fan, I’m disappointed. But, alas, there might be some hope for you.

Think of the Thunderbolts as Marvel’s version of The Suicide Squad, of course less explicit 😉. For those of you not familar, The Suicide Squad is a group of misfit villains tasked with carrying out dangerous missions, since they are worthless, and the government and whatnot can afford to possibly lose these villains’ lives while on mission. Pretty messed up, huh?

Remember Miss Contessa? AKA Miss Entitlement? Well, yeah, we know what she’s been up to now. Throughout The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Black Widow, we saw her trying to recruit people. But for what? Enter the Thunderbolts.

The Purpose of the Thunderbolts Initiative

The whole idea behind recruiting in this case, anti-heros, was that they were more willing and able to risk their lives. Not just that, but some tasks were illegal, or required rulebreaking, and no plain old hero would be able to or want to do that. It’s bascially the governments alternate resource when something needed to be off the grid. Again, still messed up.

If you need another analogy, its like the Red Room and Black Widow Program. A way to complete things off the grid, since the agents metaphorically did not have a face.

Canidates

I’m pretty excited about this movie, ‘cause it has some pretty interesting characters, and watching them work together and meet each other will be sooooo fun!!

First off, my girl Yelena. I mean, like, she’s a boss. We definitely know she’s confirmed, since at the end of Black Widow Contessa Valentina came to see Yelena, which spiraled into Hawkeye. I mean come on, the whole story for Hawkeye was basically centered around Yelena, and her being on a mission, plus wanting revenge.

Alexei! Alexei! How could we forget about him! Yes, he is rumored to be in it. I mean, it makes sense. His rivalry with Captain America, unbeknownst to Steve. He not only shares connections to Yelena, being her father, but his whole rivalry thing can be shared by…..

John godforsaken Walker. This guy has serious issues.

Of course, we sadly saw this coming. We know this genius was recruited by Valentina in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, meaning we would have to see him again. Sadly. His alter ego is U.S. Agent, and Contessa actually said that during TFATWS. He’s also an anti-hero, who in the comics has beef with Cap. I read this one comic with Ravonna, and he appeared alongside Cap, but ultimately his goal was to save Chronopolis, or Kang’s home city in the future. So, anti-hero.

James Buchanan Barnes, AKA Bucky Barnes, AKA The Winter Soldier. I think his appearance is going to be the most interesting, considering his affliction with Walker, and also him learning about the “rivalry” Alexei has with Cap 🤣. He is an unlikely member, considering the fact he just wants to move on and live his life. But his appearance will create some great comedy 😁.

And last but not least, someone we haven’t seen in a while. I present, Ava Starr! Or, Ghost. Doesn’t ring a bell? Maybe this will:

It will be really nice to see her again, since she’s such an interesting character with an amazing dynamic. Now that she is healed, we don’t really know what she’s been up to. I really don’t know whether or not she can still use quantum phasing, but I really hope so. I though that was such a unique power to have, and makes a story really interesting.

Well, that’s all folks! I hope to see you soon, and hope this helped inform you on The Thunderbolts! See you!
